Hire full-stack developers, from schema to deploy
Qilin Lab places senior full-stack developers from Bengaluru, India, on a month-to-month contract from $1,500 per developer per month. One engineer owns the React or Next.js front end, the Node.js or Django back end, PostgreSQL and the AWS or GCP deploy. A matched shortlist arrives in about 48 hours, and a developer in about a week. The first 3 days are a trial: stop then and pay nothing. For employers, not job seekers.
We'll send a shortlist and pricing in about 48 hours.
Four layers, one engineer: what a full-stack developer actually owns.
On this page, full-stack means a senior engineer who can take one feature from a database table to a production URL without handing it to anyone else. It does not mean equally deep in everything. Nearly every full-stack engineer is stronger on one side, so ask which, and match it to where your product carries the most risk.
| Layer | What the engineer does there | Tools |
|---|---|---|
| Front end | Pages, components, forms, client state, loading and error states | React, Next.js, TypeScript |
| Back end | API endpoints, business rules, login and permissions, background jobs, third-party integrations | Node.js with Express.js, Python with Django, Go |
| Database | Tables and constraints, migrations, indexes, slow-query fixes, a backup that has been restored at least once | PostgreSQL, with Redis as a cache where it is needed |
| Deployment | Dockerfile, CI pipeline, staging and production environments, logs, alerts, rollbacks | Docker, AWS, GCP |
The title alone tells you little. In the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 27% of 43,560 respondents gave "Developer, full-stack" as their role. It was the most common answer, ahead of back-end at 14.2% and front-end at 4.3%. So test both sides with the interview questions below.
On MERN: that is MongoDB, Express, React and Node (MongoDB's definition). Three of the four are in our shipped work. Our case studies use PostgreSQL, not MongoDB.
If your need sits mostly on one side, a narrower page fits better: React developers for interface-heavy work, Node.js developers for APIs and services, Next.js developers where rendering and SEO decide the outcome.
Looking for a job, not a contractor? Nothing on this page is a vacancy. Our careers page is the right place.
Hire one full-stack developer, or a front-end and back-end pair?
One generalist is cheaper and has no handoffs. Two specialists are faster when the work splits cleanly.
| Your situation | One full-stack developer | Front-end + back-end pair |
|---|---|---|
| First version, scope still moving every week | Fits. One person re-plans a feature without a meeting. | Often wasteful. One side waits while the other catches up. |
| A fixed launch date and two streams that can run side by side | A bottleneck. One person is one stream of work. | Fits, if both sides agree the API contract in the first week. |
| Work is lopsided: mostly interface, or mostly services and integrations | The wrong hire. You pay for a half you will not use. | Also the wrong hire. Take one specialist for the heavy side. |
| Holiday and sickness cover | A single point of failure. Reduce it with a runbook and code review by your own team. | Partial cover. Each keeps their own side running. |
| Monthly cost through Qilin Lab | One rate, from $1,500 | Two rates |
Where a generalist is the wrong hire
- Native or deep mobile work. Swift, Kotlin or a complex React Native app need a mobile engineer, from $1,600 a month.
- Machine learning and LLM features. Training, evaluation and retrieval are a different job. See AI developers, from $1,800 a month.
- Heavy data engineering. Warehouses, streaming and large batch pipelines.
- Large design-system work. A component library shared by several teams, with tokens, theming and accessibility audits. It also needs a designer, which a full-stack developer is not.
- Platform operations at scale. Many services, several clusters or a compliance audit. Qilin Lab runs that as a separate DevOps service.
If two or more of those describe your roadmap, say so in the brief.
What the first full-stack engineer should own in an early-stage product.
Give the first engineer whole outcomes, not tickets on one layer. Four things to hand over, in order.
- One thin slice, live in the first two weeks. Sign-up, the one action your product exists for, the data saved, and an admin view that shows it, on a real URL.
- The data model. Table design costs the most to reverse. Ask for a one-page diagram early, and read it yourself.
- The path to production. Merge to deploy, a staging environment, a way to roll back, and database backups with one restore actually tested.
- A README and a runbook. The test: a second engineer can run and deploy the product on their first day.
What stays with you
Product decisions, visual design and sign-off on anything regulated stay with the company. So do the accounts. Keep the code repository, the cloud account and the domain in your company's name, and give the engineer access. That keeps the ownership position in the terms simple, and a change of engineer never locks you out.
Use the 3-day trial on a slice, not a slide deck
The trial is the first 3 days, and you pay nothing if you stop there. That is shorter than some vendors offer, so plan it. Have repository access, a staging environment and one scoped ticket ready on the first morning. Pick a ticket that touches a table, an endpoint and a screen. Ask for a pull request that crosses both sides by day three, and judge the trial on what you get.
Why item 3 matters: Open Door Education reached Qilin Lab with manual rollbacks and a build stalled across several vendors. After a Qilin Lab team rebuilt it with blue-green rollouts and automated rollback, releases moved to weekly with no incidents.
How to interview a senior full-stack developer: eight questions.
Everyone on a Qilin Lab shortlist has passed a coding assessment and a live interview. You still interview them yourself. These questions test both sides.
1. Sketch the tables for one part of our product. What do you index, and what do you leave out of version one?
Strong: asks how the data will be read before drawing anything. Puts foreign keys and unique constraints in the database, not only in application code. Weak: starts from the screens and ends with one wide table.
2. A production table has tens of millions of rows. Add an index and rename a column with no downtime. How?
Strong: knows a plain index build in PostgreSQL blocks writes until it finishes, and that CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY avoids that at the price of a slower build (PostgreSQL documentation). Renames in steps: add the new column, write to both, backfill in batches, switch reads, drop the old one. Weak: "run the migration at night".
3. The front end and the API keep disagreeing about a field. How do you stop it happening again?
Strong: one source of truth for the contract, such as an OpenAPI file or shared TypeScript types, validated at the boundary. Additive changes only, or a version. One error format. Weak: "we talk more".
4. Where does the session live, and what happens when a user logs out on one device?
Strong: compares a server-side session with a signed token, and knows the token is harder to revoke. Sets the cookie HttpOnly, which MDN describes as forbidding JavaScript from accessing the cookie, plus Secure and SameSite. Checks permissions on the server for every request. Weak: hides the button and calls it access control.
5. Which of our pages would you build ahead of time, render per request, or render in the browser? What gets cached where?
Strong: decides page by page, by who sees it and how fresh it must be. Names the cache layers (browser, CDN, application, database) and how each is cleared. Points out unprompted that a per-user response in a shared cache leaks data. The Next.js page goes further.
6. Walk me from merge to production. Then undo a bad release at 6 pm on a Friday.
Strong: CI runs the tests. One Docker image is built once and promoted between environments. Migrations are backwards compatible, so the previous version still runs on the new schema. Rollback is redeploying the previous image, and they have done it for real. Weak: "revert the commit and wait for the build".
7. A page takes six seconds to load. Where do you look first?
Strong: measures first. Opens the browser's network waterfall and checks Largest Contentful Paint, where Google's guidance is 2.5 seconds or less at the 75th percentile of page loads. Then server timing, then the query log and EXPLAIN for a missing index or a query inside a loop, then payload, bundle and image sizes. Weak: reaches for "add Redis" or a rewrite before measuring anything.
8. Which side are you weaker on, and what did you last hand to a specialist?
Strong: a specific answer, such as complex animation, query tuning beyond indexes, or cluster networking, with a real example. Weak: "I am equally strong at everything". Nobody is.
What a full-stack developer costs: local salary medians against a monthly contract.
The American, British and Canadian occupation classifications used here have no "full-stack developer" category. These are the closest official ones, in local currency.
| Where | Official category | Median pay | Per month | Data date and source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Software developers | $135,980 a year | about $11,330 | May 2025, BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| United States | Web developers | $92,650 a year | about $7,720 | May 2025, BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| United Kingdom | Programmers and software development professionals (SOC 2134), full-time | £56,914 gross a year | about £4,740 | Tax year ending 5 April 2025, ONS ASHE Table 14.7a, 2025 provisional |
| Canada | Software developers and programmers (NOC 21232) | C$48.08 an hour | about C$8,330 at 2,080 hours a year | Reference period 2023-2024, updated 19 November 2025, Job Bank, Government of Canada |
| Qilin Lab | Senior full-stack developer on contract, full-time on your work | from $18,000 a year | from $1,500 | Published rate on this page, 21 September 2026 |
Five cautions before you compare
- $1,500 buys one rate, not two. A front-end and back-end pair, in the decision table further up this page, is two rates. The final figure depends on seniority and stack and is confirmed on the shortlist.
- The medians cover every experience level. For US software developers, the BLS reports the lowest 10% earned less than $82,460 and the highest 10% more than $214,670 in May 2025.
- Salary is not what an employee costs. Across all US private-industry workers in June 2026, wages and salaries were 70.0% of employer compensation cost and benefits the other 30.0% (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, released 9 September 2026). That covers every occupation, not software alone.
- Currencies are as published. Pounds and Canadian dollars are not converted, because exchange rates move.
- A contract engineer is not an employee. A Qilin Lab engineer is a monthly cost you can stop, working from Bengaluru, India, with hours matched to overlap yours, under a contract governed by Indian law. That suits a fixed project or an uncertain roadmap. It does not suit a founding engineer who should hold equity.
Growing from a single developer to a team, one month at a time.
Start with one. Add the second person when the work tells you to. The contract is month to month, so the team can grow or shrink with the roadmap. The notice a change needs is written in your engagement contract.
Four signs that one is no longer enough
- Pull requests wait days because nobody else can review them.
- The interface is always waiting for the API, or the other way round.
- The roadmap has two streams that do not depend on each other.
- One person is carrying every production alert alone.
Who to add second
Usually a specialist, not another generalist. Look at where the backlog piles up. If it is screens and interaction, add a React developer. If it is integrations, queues and data, add a Node.js developer. A new request goes through the same steps as the first, with a shortlist in about 48 hours.
At three or more
Past two developers, somebody has to run delivery. If one of your own engineering managers has the time, keep buying single developers and point them at the same backlog. If nobody on your side has the time, ask for a tech lead on the team: they run stand-ups, review the code and own the sprint, and you get one person to call instead of three. That changes the shape of the team, not the contract, which stays month to month.
For scale: Qilin Lab ran teams of 10 engineers on Canco Petroleum, 8 on Eduley, 7 on Kashti FinServ and 6 on EcoProcurer. Those were project teams, not staff placements.
Products where one Qilin Lab team owned the front end and the back end.
These were platform builds run by Qilin Lab teams, not single placements. They are the evidence for the stacks named on this page. See also Open Door Education and EcoProcurer.

Full-stack hiring questions.
Our stack is not the one you list. Can you still match someone?
Put it in the brief. The stacks named on this page are the ones our engineers have shipped, not the limit of what we will look at. If your back end is Rails, Laravel or .NET, say so and we will tell you whether we have someone before you spend an hour interviewing. Where we cannot match it, we say so rather than sending a near miss. There is nothing to pay either way.
Do you have MERN stack developers?
Partly. MERN is MongoDB, Express, React and Node. React, Node.js and Express.js are all in work our engineers have shipped. The database in each of those case studies is PostgreSQL, and we have no MongoDB project on file to show you. If MongoDB is fixed in your product, put it in the brief so the match is made against it.
Can one person really do both front end and back end well?
For ordinary web product work, yes. A senior engineer can design a table, write the endpoint, build the screen and deploy it. The limit is usually time, not skill: one person is one stream of work. For native mobile, machine learning, heavy data pipelines and large design systems, hire a specialist.
Will a full-stack developer design the user interface?
They will build it, not design it. Expect a full-stack developer to turn Figma files or wireframes into working screens and to use a component library well. Do not expect brand design or user research. If you have no designer, agree on one component library at the start.
How much DevOps can a full-stack developer handle?
Enough for one product: a Dockerfile, a CI pipeline, deployment to AWS or GCP, environment configuration, logs, basic alerts and backups. Several Kubernetes clusters, network design, compliance audits or a cloud cost programme belong with a DevOps engineer, which Qilin Lab offers as a separate service. On Open Door Education one Qilin Lab team did both, and monthly cloud spend went from ₹3L to ₹1.5L.
Who owns the code a full-stack developer writes for us?
Under Qilin Lab's terms, once all fees due are paid in full, Qilin Lab assigns to you the intellectual property in the bespoke deliverables you commissioned. Until then the work product remains Qilin Lab's. Pre-existing Qilin Lab tools and libraries stay ours, with a non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free licence for you to use any that are built into your deliverables. A signed statement of work or master services agreement can change these defaults and takes priority.
