Scope

What a senior Node.js backend engineer should cover

Finding someone who has used Node.js is easy. In the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 48.7% of respondents had done extensive work in it over the past year, ahead of every other web technology listed. Telling a senior backend engineer from someone who has written a few routes is harder.

A senior Node.js developer is a backend engineer first. Expect them to talk through eight areas from their own production work.

  • API design. REST resources, versioning, pagination, one error format, written docs. Our development service also lists GraphQL, but no project on this page depends on it, so put it in the brief and test for it.
  • Frameworks. The same service lists Express.js and NestJS. Express calls itself a fast, unopinionated, minimalist web framework. NestJS is built with TypeScript, uses Express under the hood and supplies an application architecture out of the box.
  • Relational data. PostgreSQL sits behind five of the six Qilin Lab projects in the next section. Expect schema design, migrations, indexes and transactions, not only ORM calls.
  • Caching and search. Redis is on our service list. Elasticsearch is in the stack of the EcoProcurer solar marketplace below.
  • Queues. RabbitMQ carries the ICS Mobile messaging pipeline below, and Kafka the Spend The Bits payments core. Expect fluency in acknowledgements, retries, dead letters and ordering.
  • Auth. Sessions or tokens, OAuth, role-based access (the Canco admin portal applies it across 200+ stations) and per-tenant rate limits (ICS Mobile).
  • Observability. Structured logs with request IDs, metrics, traces, alerts. ICS Mobile and Spend The Bits run on Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Deployment. Docker, CI/CD, Kubernetes, AWS. All six projects run on AWS, four of them on Kubernetes.

Nobody is equally deep in all eight. Name the two or three that matter most in your brief.

Evidence

Backend problems this team has solved with Node.js

Six projects from our case studies, each with Node.js in the stack. Every number is quoted as published there.

Qilin Lab project teams built and ran these, with 5 to 12 engineers where a size is published. They were not single contract placements, and the person on your shortlist may not have worked on them. Ask.

Throughput

ICS Mobile sends SMS, WhatsApp and RCS messages for its clients. The platform was capped at 500 transactions per second and clients complained of delays. A team of 5 rebuilt the pipeline around event streams, with a worker per channel. Back-pressure and retries went into the message bus, and per-tenant rate limits on top. The service then moved to Kubernetes with horizontal auto-scaling. Result: 500 to 3,000 TPS, six times the capacity, in 14 months.

Volume growth

Kashti FinServ, a loan aggregator, went from 3 manually handled loan applications a day to 3,000+. A team of 7 built digital origination with e-sign and e-KYC, rule-based underwriting with overrides, and audit logs that cannot be edited. Onboarding a lending partner dropped from weeks to days.

Reliability and payments

Spend The Bits runs a B2B finance application and a retail crypto wallet. Its legacy payments stack had 20%+ downtime in peak transaction windows. The rebuild put the payments core on Kafka with idempotent retries, added real-time reconciliation and set up Prometheus and Grafana before the business logic. Uptime went from 80% to 99.9%, and releases from monthly to several a week.

Markchem pays the applicators in its loyalty programme by UPI on the day they claim. Duplicate scans and expired codes are stopped before any payout, and every code scanned, redeemed and paid out is in an audit trail. The app has 10,000+ downloads on Google Play.

Many sites, unreliable connections

Canco Petroleum operates 200+ fuel stations across Canada. A team of 10 has run its technology for 3 years. Pumps sync to the cloud and keep working when a station drops offline. Fleet card reconciliation and fraud flagging run in real time, and streaming APIs replaced the batch supplier integrations.

EcoProcurer, a B2B solar marketplace with RFQ, bidding and escrow flows, is the sixth: Express.js, PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch, built by a team of 6 in 18 months.

Fit

When to hire a Node.js developer on contract, and when not to

A contract backend developer works when the work is defined and someone technical directs it. It fails when you expect the contractor to supply both.

It fits when

  • You have a backlog, a CTO or tech lead who reviews pull requests, and too few backend hands. You want another engineer in about a week, not after a salaried search.
  • The work has edges: a new service, a payment or carrier integration, a module pulled out of a monolith, a move to a supported Node.js release, a queue in front of a slow dependency.
  • You need cover for a period: parental leave, a launch, a client deadline, or a workload you cannot yet tell will last.

It does not fit when

  • Nobody on your side can set priorities or judge backend work. If you want a team that owns delivery end to end, that is a project engagement; see development services. If someone technical does direct the work and you are weighing this against outsourcing or a dedicated team, the staff augmentation page sets it against managed services, outsourcing, a dedicated team and an in-house hire.
  • You want a permanent employee with equity, in your office. Hire locally, and budget with the salary table below.
  • The task is two weeks long. The unit here is a month of one person's full-time work. An hourly freelancer suits a small job better.
  • Your contracts or regulator bar access from outside your country. Check before you brief anyone offshore.
  • The heavy part is model training or numerical computing. That is Python work; see AI and ML engineers.

Three days shows how someone works, not whether their architecture holds. The month-to-month term and the replacement guarantee cover that, not the trial.

Cost

What a Node.js developer costs: salaried hire or monthly contract

No statistics agency breaks out Node.js pay. The closest official category in each country is software developers in general, so that is what the table uses.

Official pay for employed software developers, next to the contract rate on this page. Each figure is in its own currency and is not converted. The monthly column is the published annual figure divided by 12, and is our arithmetic, not the source's. Sources opened on 21 September 2026.

Qilin Labfrom $18,000 a yearfrom $1,500One senior Node.js engineer on contract, full-time on your work. We publish the monthly rate; $18,000 is twelve months of it, and the rate is confirmed on your shortlist
  • Salary is not employer cost. The government rows are pay only. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages were 70.0% of what US private-industry employers spent per hour worked and benefits the other 30.0%. That average spans all occupations. Recruiting and equipment come on top.
  • None of these sources prices backend work on its own. The category includes desktop, embedded and front-end developers, so the row sets the scale of a local hire and is not a quote for a Node.js specialist in your city.
  • The two are different things. A local employee is yours to keep and promote. A contract developer in Bengaluru is a service from an Indian company under Indian law (see terms), with hours matched to overlap yours. The time-zone arithmetic, the four contract routes and the risks are set out on hiring developers in India. Decide which the work needs before comparing prices.
Interview guide

Seven questions that separate senior Node.js engineers from the rest

Use them on our shortlist and on anyone else. A senior engineer answers from an incident they handled. A weaker one recites definitions.

1. One request runs a 2-second CPU job. What happens to every other request?

They wait. Node.js runs your JavaScript on one event loop and hands file I/O, dns.lookup(), some crypto and zlib to a worker pool, as its guide on not blocking the event loop explains. That libuv pool defaults to 4 threads. A strong answer names the fix: chunk the work so it yields, or move it to worker threads, which the docs recommend for CPU-intensive JavaScript and not for I/O.

2. You stream a 5 GB export to a slow client. What keeps memory flat?

Backpressure. Per the Node.js streams guide, .write() returns false once the buffer passes highWaterMark, and the source pauses until 'drain' fires. The stream API reference sets that default at 64 KiB for byte streams on non-Windows platforms since v22.0.0. Good candidates use stream.pipeline(), which forwards errors and cleans up. The best carry the idea to queues: RabbitMQ's documentation pairs manual acknowledgements with a bounded prefetch.

3. A payment webhook arrives twice, and the copies overlap. Walk me through your handler.

Stripe's webhook documentation says an endpoint may receive an event more than once, order is not guaranteed, the signature check needs the raw body, and a 2xx should go back before slow logic. So: verify on the raw body (in Express, keep the JSON parser off that route), insert the event ID under a unique constraint in the same PostgreSQL transaction as the state change, acknowledge, then work from a queue. Outbound, send an idempotency key so a retry cannot charge twice.

4. Forty pods each open a pool of 20 PostgreSQL connections. What breaks?

Arithmetic: 800 connections against a server whose max_connections default is typically 100. A senior engineer sizes each pool from the database's limit or puts a pooler in front. They know the node-postgres pooling rules: a new connection costs a 20-30 millisecond handshake, one client runs one query at a time, and a client never released drains the pool for good. And a transaction stays on one checked-out client, never on pool.query.

5. Kubernetes sends your pod SIGTERM during a deploy. What happens next?

The Kubernetes pod lifecycle page gives a grace period, 30 seconds by default, then KILL. In Node.js, installing a SIGTERM listener removes the default exit, so the process must end itself. Expected sequence: fail readiness, call server.close() (it stops new connections and, since v19.0.0, closes idle keep-alive ones), stop consuming from the queue, let in-flight requests finish, close the database pool, exit. A timer shorter than the grace period is the backstop.

6. A list endpoint returns 50 orders and makes 51 queries. Find it and fix it.

The N+1 query. Senior engineers find it in query logs or a trace, not by reading code, and fix it with a join or one batched lookup such as WHERE id = ANY($1). They know ORMs hide it behind lazy loading, and they add a query-count assertion to the tests.

7. A promise rejects and nothing catches it. What happens, and what do you retry?

Since v15.0.0 the default --unhandled-rejections mode is throw: with no handler, the rejection is raised as an uncaught exception, which ends the process. Strong candidates separate operational errors (a timeout, a 503) from bugs. They retry only idempotent operations, with capped backoff and jitter, and park poison messages after a set number of attempts. RabbitMQ's documentation warns that consumers which requeue on every transient failure create a redelivery loop.

Node.js facts were checked on nodejs.org on 21 September 2026.

Stack

Node.js with the rest of your stack

  • With React. Four of the six projects above pair a Node.js API with a React front end. When both sides are TypeScript, request and response types can be shared, so a contract change fails the build before it reaches a user. If the backlog is mostly interface work, start with React developers.
  • With Next.js. qilinlab.com is a Next.js 14 App Router site built by this team. Queues, long-running jobs and payment webhooks tend to outgrow a Next.js server and move into a separate Node.js service. If the site is the larger share of the work, see Next.js developers.
  • One person for both ends. A small product with one API and one web app may not need a backend specialist. A full-stack developer starts at the same $1,500 a month.
  • TypeScript on the server. The Node.js TypeScript page marks type stripping stable from v25.2.0 and v24.12.0. Node.js runs files with erasable TypeScript syntax directly and performs no type checking, so tsc still belongs in CI.
  • Runtime version. The Node.js release page says production applications should use only Active LTS or Maintenance LTS releases. On 21 September 2026 it showed v24 and v22 as LTS, v26 as Current and v20 as end-of-life. An API on v20 or older has an upgrade to schedule, which makes a contained first project for a new backend engineer.

Questions, answered

Before you hire a Node.js developer.

Do your Node.js developers write TypeScript?

Yes. TypeScript is one of the stacks Qilin Lab staffs, next to Node.js. Say in the brief whether your API is TypeScript or plain JavaScript and how strict your compiler settings are, and the shortlist is matched to that. Current Node.js LTS releases can run TypeScript files by stripping the types, but they do not check them, so ask candidates how they set up type checking in CI.

Should we ask for NestJS or Express experience?

Ask for what your codebase already uses. Both are on our development service list, and Express.js is in the Canco Petroleum and EcoProcurer stacks. For a new service, Express gives you a minimal router and leaves structure to you. NestJS brings its own architecture, which helps when several engineers share one codebase. In the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 19.9% of respondents had worked extensively with Express and 6.7% with NestJS.

Can a contract developer take over a legacy Node.js API?

Yes. Say so in the brief, because reading old code is a different skill from starting fresh. Two projects on this page were rebuilds of existing systems: the ICS Mobile messaging pipeline and the Spend The Bits payments stack. Plan the first weeks around a dependency audit, tests on the riskiest routes and, if the API runs an end-of-life Node.js version, the upgrade. Hand over any runbooks, dashboards and incident notes you have.

Will the developer be on call or have production access?

That is decided per engagement and written into the contract; there is no default we can promise here. Tell us in the brief whether you need production access, deploy rights or a place on an on-call rota, which environments are involved and what your security review requires. Arrangements run from staging-only access to a rota slot, and are settled before the engagement starts.

Who owns the code a Qilin Lab developer writes?

You do, once it is paid for. Under our terms, on full payment Qilin Lab assigns to the client the intellectual property rights in bespoke deliverables the client commissioned. Pre-existing Qilin Lab tools and libraries stay ours, with a perpetual, royalty-free licence to any that are embedded in your deliverables. A signed engagement contract overrides these defaults. Governing law is India, and disputes go to MCIA arbitration seated in Bangalore.

What happens on day four of the trial?

If you are happy after 3 days, the developer carries on and the engagement runs month to month at the rate shown on the shortlist. If you are not, you tell us within those 3 days, the engagement stops and you pay nothing. How the first invoice treats the trial days when you continue is set out in the engagement contract. Before day one, pick a two-day ticket that shows backend judgement: an endpoint with validation and a test, a slow query, or a webhook handler to make idempotent.

How much of our working day will the developer overlap with?

Developers are matched to overlap with your working hours, so stand-ups, pairing and code review happen live. The exact hours are agreed for each engagement, so put your core hours and the meetings that matter in the brief. For backend work, also say who the developer should reach when a deploy goes wrong outside the overlap.

Do your Node.js developers work with MongoDB, or only PostgreSQL?

MongoDB is on the stack list for Qilin Lab's development service, so put it in the brief if your data lives there. Be clear about what we can show you: five of the six Qilin Lab projects described on this page run on PostgreSQL, from the Kashti FinServ loan platform to the Canco Petroleum station network, so our published proof is relational. If Mongoose schemas, aggregation pipelines or a replica-set migration are the actual work, say so in the brief and test it in the interview, before the trial starts.
